Sankofa Park Playground in Brooklyn, New York, is a celebration of African American history as well as a gift to the local community of today. The name “Sankofa” references a mythic bird that flies into the future while keeping its beak turned toward the past, reflecting the connection between history and the present.

The playground brings that history to life by featuring African cultural symbols alongside words like “Remembrance” and “Strength.” Colored in a palette of red, green and yellow, the space features rectangular archways that suggest connection and togetherness. For children ages 5 to 12, climbers of varying styles and materials, overhead events and sensory panels are linked by accessible ramps and bridges, ensuring children using mobility devices can play freely. For preschoolers, two cubical playhouses connected by learning panels create a welcoming space where imagination can thrive. At the center of it all, an inclusive Global Motion® multi-user spinner invites kids to come together for a thrilling ride.
